The 2.5 and 3-litre AJ-V6 engines are based on a Ford engine, and mounted transversely, as in the Ford Mondeo from which platform the X-type is also developed. Here however the engine drives the front and rear axles with a 40:60 torque split.
November: The "compact" Jaguar X-type goes on sale in the UK in mid 2001, in Australia by late 2001. Would you believe that it is based on the platform of the Ford Mondeo? It is amazing what a little cat like styling will disguise.
While the Mondeo is a front wheel drive car, the X-type has four wheel drive, the first such Jaguar ever.
